How To Reset Your Brother HL-2240 After Toner Refill And How To Get Rid Of The Toner Light On The Brother HL-2240 When You Have Toner In The Machine

Printer companies want to make money. There is nothing wrong with that. I think ALL of us want to make money. However, there is a problem when a printer company is trying to take YOUR money when you don't want to part with it. Brother makes excellent small office laser printers. They make other larger office printers, but their small office laser printers are extremely easy to maintain and they last a very long time. The one issue they have is that Brother cartridges are ridiculously expensive. I say they are ridiculously expensive because, in my case, they cost more than I paid for the printer! I REFUSE to buy a cartridge that cost more than I paid for the printer! The only problem is that if you refill the toner cartridge that came with the printer (which you can do forever by the way - without replacing any gears or anything crazy like that), the toner light will stay on and you still won't be able to print. Well I have a solution for that!

I am going to show you how to reset your Brother HL-2240 when the toner light comes on. This will allow you to use generic toner cartridges without jumping through crazy hoops and it will allow you to simply refill the Brother cartridge your printer came with over and over again. You don't need reset gear that some companies sell and you CERTAINLY DO NOT need to buy expensive cartridges that Brother sells. I love Brother, but I don't love spending more than the cost of the printer when I need more toner. That is money better spent at the shoe store :-).

If you need toner refills, click on one of the links in the sidebar to find what you are looking for.

Here we go. Here is how you reset the toner light on your Brother HL 2240:

1. Turn your Brother HL-2240 off

2. Open the front cover of the printer

3. Press and hold Go and turn power on. Do not let the button go.

4. When all 3 lights light up, release the Go button.

5. Press the Go button twice (You will see the Ready light blink green every time you press the Go button)

6. All of the lights will light up

7. With all of the lights on, press and release the Go button 5 times  (You will see the Ready light blink green every time you press the Go button)

8. The Error light will start blinking (Don't be alarmed. This is expected.)

9. Close door and wait. The printer will cycle through and make the sound it makes when you initially cut it on. After that sound stops, your green Ready light will be on and solid.

10. You are now ready to print.

So there you go! Support the Brother corporation because they make fantastic printers! Go out and purchase a Brother HL-2240 printer - they are great -, BUT keep your hard earned money in your pocket when it comes to refilling your toner. Buy your toner off of eBay and refill the Brother cartridge that came with the printer. You will save yourself a TON of money over the long haul.

UPDATE - 7/3/2013  - BHL2 MAINTENANCE MODE
If you are having an issue in addition to the Toner reset problem, have mistakenly placed your printer into maintenance mode by pressing the Go button an incorrect number of times or you are encountering another problem, you can try resetting the printer to the factory default settings.

To perform a factory reset on your Brother HL-2240, you can  follow these instructions:
  1. Check that the front cover of the printer is closed.
  2. Turn OFF the power switch on the right side of the printer.
  3. Press and hold the GO button, and keep holding it down, as you turn on the power switch.
  4. Keep the GO button pressed down until all the LEDs light up and the Ready LED turns off. Release the GO button. Make sure that all the LEDs turn off.
  5. Press the GO button 10 times. The Ready LED will flash while the printer is reset. After the printer is reset the Ready LED will be lit.

Smooches,
Kila Morton

Robert George said...

Will this procedure also work with an unmodified (no flag gear) HL-2240 starter cartridge?

Kila Morton said...

Robert thanks for viewing this article. It absolutely will work with the starter cartridge. I still use my starter. I just refill it with toner, do this process and print!

Robert George said...

Kila,

More thanks to you. I have ordered toner and look forward following your procedure. Good Day and God Bless

Robert George said...

I received my toner and filled the starter cartridge. Following your procedure was on the easiest process I’ve ever had to do and the best part “IT WORKED”.
I took and chance and purchased this printer at a thrift store for under $15 including taxes. I printed over 200 pages using what was left in the starter cartridge and purchase new toner on ebay for under $5. This HL-2240 printer will replaced my canon LBP-430 I purchased almost 20 years ago at a price of $399; $20 is not bad for a mono laser that I now use on my home network that can be access by all computers.

Kila Morton said...

@Tops In Stone Inc I'm glad you could be helped. It is VERY easy to refill the starter toner cartridge. I think I might need to do a tutorial on that. All you do is pop off the plastic plug on the side, pour the toner in and put the plug back in. Be gentle with the plug so you don't damage it.

Thank you so much! How did you figure this out? You are so smart! I have been snatching up a couple of Brother HL-2240 printers whenever they are on sale at Staples for $60. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm not going to look into refilling them myself;-)

Thanks so much for this blog post. This was incredibly helpful. My problem was that my actual ink cartridge said "low toner". Hi. I have the same problem as anonymous--that the maintenance thing is being searched and that it cannot be searched. It seems that I'm being required to reinstall my printer. I reinstalled it already, but it's still not working. It's on ready mode, but it's detected as online by the status monitor. What does it mean? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Kia,

First, I would like to thank you for sharing this info. I wanted to ask you about the following. I have refilled the starter cartridge of my HL-2240 and reset the printer as you have indicated. The first few pages come out clear, however, now the printer leaves black marks all over the page. I realized that the sentences are being reprinted over and over on the page as the (drum or wherever part) rotates and print. Any suggestion or information you can provide on how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Sean

Kila Morton said...

Hi saramawis! You have another issue. When you say the "maintenance thing", what does that mean? Are you having a computer issue? What type of computer are you using? Did the printer ever work for you? In your case, it isn't just the toner light that is blinking. If you tell me what OTHER issues you had and EXACTLY what you did before and after, I can likely help you with your printer.

@Sean, this is very simple to solve. You can do two things. One is likely going to give you a few good pages for a little bit and the other is going to be a long term remedy. First, you can take the printer cartridge out of the tray, shake it from side to side to distribute the toner, take a dry white paper towel and wipe the roller. Put the catridge back in. This is going to get you a few more clean pages. You can also wipe the roller with a paper towel that has isopropyl alcohol on it, but you need to let it dry completely before you put it back in. That is a short term solution. The SECOND solution is to get a new roller. They sell them on eBay for $14. I purchased one myself and replaced it. It was simple. That will get you working with clean sheets quickly!

Before, refilling ink cartridges were so economical. Thanks to the new development, refilling is made easier by new feature of continuous ink system. I hope they’ll do something about the waste ink pad in the future.

Merri said...

I followed these steps and now my printer is stuck in maintenance mode! and wont register on my computer I tried to reload the printer and its not even seeing it :( any suggestions?

Merri said...

from what I seee you are confused by the bhl2 maintenance. I followed these steps to a T.. it even printed a test page. My computer told me it detected new hardware and is now calling my printer: bhl2 maintenance.. will not even detect it when I use the install disk provided with the printer

Kila Morton said...

@Merri, it sounds like your printer was having an issue other than just the toner. When you follow these steps, your printer does NOT print a test page. The toner light just goes out. I have updated this post with instructions on resetting your printer to the factory settings. That may or may not help you get started. You didn't list what your printer was displaying before you got started, but I would suggest that you reset the printer as outlined. After you reset, see what your printer is saying. If it is ONLY showing a toner light, then you should be able to follow the steps to get your printer to print. If not, you have another issue.

Merri said...

THANK YOU!!! You are AWESOME! that worked!

Kila Morton said...

@Merri - Perfect! I'm glad it worked for you! Now get on out there and get yourself some inexpensive toner so you never have to buy another cartridge again! :-)

MJ Moreland said...

Kila, I guess I'm not following. I have an HL-2240. Are you saying that in order to save money, and not have to buy expensive Brother toner, I can buy cheap compatible cartridges and pour the toner from it into the original starter cartridge? How do I do this? Why can't I just instal the compatible toner cartridge? Does the cheap compatible cartridge cause problems with the printer and cause a toner reset light to come on, or just refilling the cartridge cause the lights to come on? Why do I need the reset instructions? Please help! I would love to save money!

Kila Morton said...

Hi MJ. Thanks for stopping by!

Here is the deal.
Brother makes EXCELLENT printers.
They are cheap, efficient and hold up well. Brother would like us to ONLY use their cartridges.
However, the Brother toner cartridges for the printer can cost as much as a brand new printer!

For example, I purchased my HL-2240 new for about $40 on sale. The Brother cartridge for this printer is the TN-450. That cartridge costs about $60. Why would I spend $60 on ONE Brother Toner cartridge when I spent $40 on the printer?

When you run out of toner with the HL-2240, the toner light will come on and you won't be able to print anything. Sometimes the printer says you are out of toner even when you are actually not. How can you squeeze that last bit of toner out of the cartridge? This is where resetting and refilling come in.

First, the instructions in my post allow you to reset the printer so the toner light goes out and you can get the last little bit of toner out. Second, you can purchase a refill kit off of eBay or Amazon or the links to refill places on this page and refill the ink USING THE STARTER CARTRIDGE THE PRINTER CAME WITH! That means instead of spending $60 on a new Brother cartridge, you can spend $14 on refill toner and load the cartridge you have in the printer up with toner! YOU SAVE MONEY!

Refilling the cartridge is VERY simple. You need the toner, the cartridge and some gloves. Put the gloves on. On the side of the cartridge there is a plastic plug. Take it out. Well, you may have to pry it up, but don't damage it. It has to go back into the cartridge. Then, once you have it out, pour the toner into the cartridge. Put the plug back in. Shake the cartridge from side to side to distribute the toner. Put it back into the printer. The toner light will still blink. Follow the toner reset instructions listed above. Now you can print! You might have a few streaks on the first few sheets. If you do, just take the cartridge out of the printer, take a paper towel, wipe the print roller and put the cartridge back in. There you go!

You are officially a money saver!

I have an HL-2170W with toner light on. Replaced toner cart with Ebay cheapie but toner light won't go off. I tried covering the plastic windows with electrical tape. I turned it off/on and did the 2-5 button tap trick, it resets, makes noise but the the Toner light comes back on.
I have hit the button 10 times to reset and then done the 2-5 trick again but NOTHING works!
No matter what I try, the toner light stays lit.
I'm officially out of ideas....

I got some "Premium Laser Toner Cartridge RB-TN450/420" from eBay and installed them in my HL-2270DW printer and after printing a few duplex sheets the printer stopped feeding paper. After looking at the copies, the toner appeared to not be completely fusing on the paper and the rollers in the printer had accumulated a lot of toner from the paper. Is there a difference in the quality of refill toner on the market? My theory is that the toner in these cartridges is "granier" than the OEM toner and doesn't completely fuse on the paper. Can you recommend a good toner supplier for refills?

Kila Morton said...

@John Chadwick - you said your printer was the 2170. This reset process is for the 2240. You might want to search for the reset process for YOUR printer. However, the steps you listed didn't follow the process I outlined EXACTLY. If you followed the process I outlined EXACTLY and it still didn't work for you, then the process must be different for YOUR printer and you can search around the web to find something that will work for the 2170. It shouldn't be hard to find.

@EB - there is a difference in the toner quality in some cases. However, you may need to take another step. Sometimes when you have issues with your roller, you can take a q tip dipped in 90% alcohol and run it along the roller to clean it. I have done this myself. I make no warranty on what happens if you do, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that I did that to clean the roller and things worked fine after some documents didn't print perfectly. I have also taken a paper towel with 90% alcohol and done the same thing. You also have a 2270DW - not the 2240. So do some searching beforehand to see if someone has worked on your printer and found out a solution to your problem.

Will printing documents when the paper is too small do any damage?
Sometimes the printed area in the document is wider or longer than the paper passing through. I hope it doesn't build up toner on the drum or rollers.

Hello,
I followed the instructions for factory reset after refilling my cartridge for HL-2240, but my computer is still showing my printer as Brother BHL2-Maintenance and prompting us to install the drivers. We've deleted all versions of the printer, master reset the printer then followed the instructions to get rid of the toner light, and the issue remains. Windows computers, both my desktop and laptop. Ideas?

Kila Morton said...

Hi Angela! Look through my post and perform the BHL2 reset process with your printer plugged into your computer. That should remedy that situation. We can work together to get you working again!

Certainly a great way to recycle a perfectly good printer after the next door neighbour dumped this on the street due to low toner alarm, so a really great tip, nothing quite like a bit of extra milage without directly impacting the environment due to unnecessary potential wastage.

Hello Kila,
After my Brother HL 2240D toner light came on, I refilled my starter Brother TN420 printer cartridge and reset the printer. The toner light came on again. I took out the printer cartridge, removed the cover over the cartridge gears to reset the page counter, put the cartridge and drum back into the printer, reset the printer, and tried to print. The toner light came on again. I then deleted the BRMaintence 2 image that showed up in my control panel and restarted my computer. The printer was shown as online and the green Ready light was on. I tried to print but the toner light came on again. Any suggestions?

Hello from London Kila.

Spent the entire day yesterday wrestling with my Brother HL 2130. No error lights on printer, but it will not print. The printer says the USB device (printer?) is not recognised - and it appears as 'offline' in the taskbar. Have tried lots of things (had the USB cable checked, re-installed driver, did a systems restore, unplugged, disconnected, re-booted etc etc). Someone suggested I do a factory re-set. 2 questions: 1) is a toner re-set the same thing as a general all purpose factory re-set? 2) how do I factory re-set my mode without creating more problems?! Have searched via google and Brother sites, but to no avail. Many thanks.

Greetings: Hope you can help. I just purchased the 2240. One of the main things I need is to make simple copies. IE: want to make a copy of my drivers license. I assumed I could just copy or scan on this machine, but alas, I see now, I think, that I can not do that. Am I wrong? Thanks in advance if you see that I missed something.

Great post and very helpful. You may want to check out inkjetpal.com for high quality toner cartridges. They sell discounted prices of laser toner cartridges for brother brother printers

Thank you so much for posting this. Sometimes we get the toner light even though we're using Brother toner and it's not anywhere near empty. This process does the trick.

Thank you very much for your information. It worked like you said and my Brother printer is not telling me that my toner is low because of OEM compatible cartridge. You are what makes the internet such a great resource.

Thank you, savior. I am a cancer researcher at UTEP with a grant due tomorrow and the darn toner light came on, and there was no budging it. Your recipe saved me. thanks!

Thank you!! I followed the instructions several times and it didn't work. I was worried that the firmware was updated and it wouldn't work. I then carefully re-read each step and realized I missed "Open the front cover". I retried it and BAM - worked like MAGIC! I guess you could say the first few attempts were just test runs! You saved me some cash! Thank you again! :)

Thank you SO much! My friend got me a 'good deal' on Brother toner, but I didn't even realize until I had it installed that it wasn't actually made by Brother, and my printer wasn't accepting it. This was the ONLY thing I found on the net that actually helped. Thank you!!

What an absolute angel you are with your solution to my Brother problem. After a great deal of frustration, following a power outage, turned computer and Brother off, restarted and then used your method. Excellent result

Would like to follow your instructions, but what is the front cover of my brother hl-2400 and how do I open it?

Hi Kila,

Thanks for your sharing. I have a question, how many times can we do toner reset for this printer? Forever or just several times?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Kila,
thanks to you I managed to get my 80 year old dad's printer to work again.
(My dad is the 80 year old, not the printer, haha)

He did use an original Brother refill, but still the light stayed on.

Luckily, your blog come out first when I started looking for a solution.

Will try to refill the toner when he finally runs out of his spare ones, which may take a while...

Any way, thanks again !!!

Thank you SO SO much for this! I'm at work, got the light, put in the replacement cartridge that my corporate office sent to me. They purchased an off brand and I got the light. I don't have enough in petty cash to buy a new one so I am basically SOL. I wondered, though, if there was a way to reset it and bypass the "Brother" fix which is basically, "sorry, buy one of ours". I run a small retail establishment and I wasn't sure how I was going to get by. Now I know I can use my new off brand toner. Thank you again!

Wonderful help. Thank you very much. Have found your advice the only way I could stop myself from buying another printer. I was getting so frustrated otherwise.

As a past techo in IT and present day greenie, I suspected the "Replace toner" message as being a scam, went looking and found your site, do take a bow on your elegant solution, think how much money you have saved your colleagues and how much resources you have saved, well done

Thanks Jim

Great, worked well! Could you leave a post about how you would know if you got stuck in "maintenance mode"?

After spending an hour of my time trying to troubleshoot what was going on with my printer I ran across this. THANK YOU! I can move on with my life now!

Almost threw this machine out to purchase another model as this HL2240D is no longer available. Problem is I have two new cartridges and 20 bottles of toner I would no longer be able to use. Soooooo thank you very much!!!!

I have been a Copier / Printer technician since 1986, I have tried every step by step procedure you and many others have on Google, and none of them are helping me with the toner light on my customer's Hl2240, I have tried new Brother brand toner and aftermarket, reset the printer and did the step by step till I was blue in the face and still no luck. I am wondering if I have a printer that has just plain dies and time to retire? Any feedback appreciated.

Perfect! worked like a charm

I purchased an HL-2230 about 4 years ago. 2 years ago, the toner light came on. Didn't seem to me that I had printed that many pages. I used the toner reset you describe here and it's still printing just fine 2 years later. Upsets me that the toner indicator came on when there's obviously still plenty of toner left in the cartridge. When the page comes out blank, I'll replace it, and not before then.

Kila Morton said...

@Brian - Thanks for leaving a comment. I am going to tell you something. I think that you might need to try my solution one more time. If it didn't work for you, it is likely that you are stuck in maintenance mode. It is hard to figure out sometimes that you are in maintenance mode because you don't get a visual indicator. So here is my suggestion for you. First, use the instructions outlined to get out of maintenance mode. After you go through that process, try my reset procedure again and see how it works for you. Once you get caught in maintenance mode hell, nothing you try will work UNTIL and UNLESS you get out of it.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Kila - very useful!!

Thank you so much for sharing this info! My printer's "Toner" light came on a few weeks ago and wouldn't let me print even though I haven't printed more than 200 pages with the current cartridge. I was about to order a new cartridge when I found this page and followed your instructions. I'm back in business and the printer is printing just fine now! Thanks again!!!

Dear Kila,

Thank you so much - this worked and much easier than other method (manipulating the mechanical gear set on the printer) found on the net. How did you know about this ?

I used my printer very little, think printed < 50 pages (with the original starter toner cartridge) and the toner light started blinking. After resetting, the the print is jet black and sharp. When I do need to refill, how many times can I refill the starter cartridge?

Peter

I tried this 3 times, with factory reset in between.

Just wanna say thanks for this post! I have had this printer for about 5 years and I am constantly brought back to this page everytime I have toner issues because I forget how to do and am too lazy to write it down myself!

So please dont ever delete this post!

Gracias!

Process has worked a few times for me...but now doesn't. I have an HL-2240 Brother Printer. I've done the factory reset process - and the reset process (now many times) and toner light still on. I saw a 2-step fix about a toner sensor bypass, but that didn't work either. Any other ideas? Thanks for your time. Mary
